A small dog is not a scaled-down large one
Weight for weight, small breeds burn energy considerably faster than large ones. A Chihuahua needs more calories per kilogram of body weight than a Labrador does — which is why food for small dogs is more energy-dense rather than simply served in smaller amounts.
They also mature earlier. A small breed is nutritionally adult at around ten months, where a large breed is still growing well past its first birthday. And they are famously particular about food, partly because a small stomach fills quickly and partly because small dogs are more often hand-fed and indulged. Watch the teeth. Small breeds carry the same number of teeth as large ones in a much smaller jaw, so they crowd — and crowded teeth trap food and build tartar quickly. Dental disease is the commonest health problem in small dogs, and it is largely preventable. Brushing is the single most effective thing you can do; dental chews and check-ups help. Bad breath is not just a small-dog trait, it is usually the first sign of a problem worth treating.
Feeding it
Weigh the daily ration. With a small dog the margin for error is tiny — a few extra pieces of kibble is a far larger share of a 4 kg dog's daily intake than of a 30 kg dog's, and treats add up faster than owners expect.
Split it into two meals rather than one. Small dogs are prone to low blood sugar on an empty stomach, particularly toy breeds.
Change foods over about a week. Fresh water always available.
