Royal Canin Maxi Adult Dog Dry Food 4KG
Royal Canin Maxi Adult is a complete dry food for large dogs — 26 to 44 kg, from fifteen months to five years. Two things drive the formula: joints carrying a great deal of weight, and a digestive system that has to handle a lot of food.
Big dogs run on a different clock
Look at when this food starts and stops. A small breed is nutritionally adult at ten months; a large breed is not until fifteen, because it is still building frame. And where a medium dog stays on adult food until seven, a large one moves to a senior formula at five.
Bigger dogs take longer to finish growing and begin ageing sooner. Adulthood — the stretch where a dog is simply an adult with no special requirements — is shortest in the largest breeds. It is worth knowing, because the most common feeding mistake with big dogs is leaving them on the same bag for years after their needs have moved on.
Joints carry the difference
A 40 kg dog puts several times the load through the same joint structures as a 10 kg one, over the same daily walks. That is why osteoarthritis is so much commoner in large breeds, and why this formula includes glucosamine and chondroitin — building blocks of joint cartilage — alongside the omega-3s. Keeping weight in check does more for a big dog's joints than any supplement, but the two work in the same direction.
- ✓Glucosamine and chondroitin. Targeted at cartilage in the breeds that put most demand on it.
- ✓EPA and DHA. Marine omega-3s, working on joints and coat together.
- ✓Built for digestibility. High-quality protein and balanced fibre — large dogs eat a lot, and inefficient food shows up quickly in stool quality.
- ✓Borage oil for the coat. A source of omega-6 alongside the marine fats.
- ✓Kibble sized for a big jaw. Large enough to require chewing rather than being inhaled whole.
Large, deep-chested dogs carry the highest risk of gastric dilatation-volvulus, where the stomach fills with gas and twists. It kills within hours and cannot be treated at home.
Signs: trying to vomit but bringing nothing up, a swollen or hard belly, restlessness and an inability to settle, heavy drooling, obvious distress. Any of these in a large dog means an emergency vet immediately, at any hour.
To lower the risk: split the daily food into two or more meals rather than one large one, and keep hard exercise away from mealtimes by an hour either side.
Feeding it
Weigh the ration and split it across two meals. Feed to body condition, not just to the chart — ribs easily felt under a thin layer of fat, a visible waist from above.
Every extra kilogram is carried by the joints for the rest of the dog's life. Weight control is the single most effective thing an owner of a large breed can do.
Change foods over about a week. Fresh water always available, and more of it in summer heat.
At five years, Royal Canin's Maxi Adult 5+ takes over. Moving across on time matters more in large breeds than in any other size group.
