Royal Canin Hair & Skin Care is a complete dry food for adult cats with dry skin or a dull, lifeless coat. Where the wet version supplies moisture alongside the same nutrients, the kibble concentrates them — and the specific oils it uses are the reason it works.
Not just any fat
Skin holds moisture in and keeps irritants out through a barrier built largely from fats. When that barrier is poorly supplied, the result shows up as flaking, dryness and a coat that has lost its shine.
Which fats matters more than how much. Royal Canin build this formula on borage and soya oil, both unusually rich in gamma-linolenic acid, alongside fish oil for the marine omega-3s. Added to that are the supporting cast the skin needs to use them: B-vitamins, specific amino acids, zinc and copper — copper in particular being involved in pigment formation.
- ✓Borage and soya oil. Concentrated sources of gamma-linolenic acid, aimed squarely at the skin barrier.
- ✓Fish oil. Marine omega-3s, the form cats use most readily.
- ✓Zinc, copper and B-vitamins. Deficiency in any of these shows in the coat before it shows anywhere else.
- ✓33% protein. Hair is largely protein; growing a full coat is a continuous demand on it.
- ✓Pairs with the wet version. The same nutrients, plus the water a cat on kibble alone tends not to drink.
Royal Canin report a significant improvement in coat shine after 21 days of feeding this exclusively, from their own internal study. Three weeks is about right biologically — that is roughly how long it takes for changes in the diet to reach the growing hair.
Worth knowing before you switch. A coat-support food is rich by design — the oils that do the work carry calories with them. This is not a weight-control diet, and it runs considerably higher in fat than one. If your cat is already carrying extra weight, measure portions carefully and talk to your vet about whether coat support or weight is the priority. Both can be managed, but not by ignoring one of them.
Feeding it
Change over about a week. Feed it exclusively for at least three weeks before judging — the study result depends on exclusive feeding, and topping up with other foods dilutes the effect.
Weigh the daily ration from the pack chart. With an energy-dense food, eyeballing the bowl adds up quickly.
Reseal the bag and keep it cool and dry. The oils that make this food work are also the part that goes stale fastest in heat and light.
Coat changes that come on quickly, or arrive with scratching, scabs or bald patches, are worth a vet's opinion first. Nutrition helps a coat that is merely lacklustre; it does not treat fleas, allergies or thyroid disease.
