The coat is a readout, not a decoration

A cat's coat is one of the most honest indicators of what is going on underneath. Skin renews itself constantly and hair grows continuously, both drawing heavily on protein and fat from the diet. When something is off — nutritionally or medically — a dull, dry or thinning coat is often the first visible sign, well before anything else looks wrong.

That also means a coat responds to what you feed. Royal Canin build this recipe around omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, including GLA, EPA and DHA, which support the skin barrier that keeps moisture in and irritants out. They also include tyrosine, an amino acid the body uses to make melanin — the pigment that gives a coat its depth of colour.

  • Omega-3 and omega-6. Including GLA, EPA and DHA, aimed at the skin barrier and coat condition.
  • Tyrosine for colour. Supports melanin production, which shows most clearly in dark-coated cats.
  • Low fat, sound protein. Coat support without the calorie load — protein held at a level that maintains muscle.
  • Urinary support included. Formulated to help maintain normal bladder function alongside the coat benefits.
  • Moisture with every meal. Wet food carries water into cats that rarely drink enough on their own.

Royal Canin report that more than 90% of owners saw good skin and coat quality after three weeks of feeding this range, on the basis of their own internal study. Three weeks is a realistic window — hair grows slowly, and no diet changes a coat overnight.

Feeding it

Practical notes

Serve at room temperature rather than fridge-cold, and follow the daily amount on the pack for your cat's weight. Change foods over about a week.

Give it three to four weeks before judging the coat. Regular brushing helps in parallel — it lifts dead hair, spreads natural oils, and means less of it swallowed and brought back up as hairballs.

When a coat problem is not a diet problem. Bald patches, scabs, persistent scratching, or a coat that deteriorates quickly are worth a vet's opinion rather than a change of food. Fleas, allergies, ringworm and thyroid disease all show up in the coat first, and none of them are fixed by nutrition. A cat that stops grooming altogether is usually telling you it feels unwell.
